Barrister’s Room

For this project, our first commercial interior commission, we were asked to redesign and update a Sydney city office with new joinery, furniture and fittings.

In terms of design, the client’s instructions were minimal but clear: a polished concrete floor, pale timber shelves and a glass table – the rest he left to us.

Storage was one of the most important considerations for this project. In addition to providing shelving for metres of books, we needed to accommodate the tens of ring binders that constantly move into and out of the client’s office. These are now housed in low cupboards under the windows as well as behind a large red sliding panel and on extra shelves behind the office door. A printer is concealed behind a lift-up panel below the windows, and a tray designed as part of the cantilevered desk hides power points and computer cables from view.

Hoop Pine plywood has been used for most of the joinery, with coloured polyurethane finishes providing accents on the cupboard doors and drawer fronts. A new ceiling and track lighting were installed, as well as concealed lighting above and below the desk and above the window cabinet. Following some testing, the builder deemed the existing concrete slab suitable for polishing and this slightly rough floor finish, along with the exposed zinc plated sliding door track, contributes to the semi-industrial aesthetic of the space.
