Bushland Cafe

In 2011, the practice won a tender to design a new 80 seat café building on a bushy site that overlooks a large sports field and has views to Sydney Harbour.

The design focused on a prominent verandah partially cantilevered above the sloped site and surrounded by existing trees. Integral with the cafe building was the landscape design that stepped down the slope and around the trees, providing seating for spectators and a play area for children.

The site is relatively exposed so the materials selected for the project were to be robust – a concrete floor, an unpainted galvanised steel structure, termite-resistant hardwood, corrugated steel roofing and aluminium doors and windows.

Tender and construction documents were completed but the clients decided not to proceed with the project.
